EV-35774 NES Optometric Training Clinic Sessions (Aberdeen) (08‑Feb‑2012 14:00) 7 therapeutics points NHS Education for Scotland NHS Education for Scotland (NES) in partnership with NHS Grampian will provide this training free of charge to GOS contracted Optometrists practicing in Scotland. Each Optometrist will sign up for a series of sessions. The remit for NES is to provide training to Optometrists in support of the GOS contract. NES is a Special Health Board providing training to all Scotland’s NHS staff in support of government policy and promotes best practice in the education and lifelong learning of all NHS staff.
This programme will enable community Optometrists to see patients with a variety of ocular diseases and to make clinical decisions on their management under the supervision on a Consultant Ophthalmologist. The CET will take place within a specially equipped NES Optometry Training Clinic which is within the Ophthalmology Outpatient's Clinic, Aberdeen Royal Infirmary, Aberdeen.

The training explores the barriers to fitting multifocal contact lenses and seeks to raise the practitioners confidence in fitting modern multifocal contact lenses, a significant improvement from the technologies that existed just a few years ago. We will review the currently available silicone hydrogel multifocal contact lenses and compare the material and design technologies and discuss the fitting process for each lens type via a step by step guide to both the initial fitting and over-refraction. In addition guidance will be given on how to best communicate the clinical aspects of presbyopia, its correction with multifocal contact lenses and specific tips for success will be given.

EV-36618 Low Vision Evening for optometrists and dispensing opticians (09‑Feb‑2012 18:30) 1 general point Action for Blind People This evening is aimed at helping practitioners to understand the needs of patients with visual impairment . In particular provision of community support for patients with mild vision loss and of support services and how their patients can access them.
There will an opportunity to look at a range of low vision aids for patients with mild vision loss and a demonstration of the low vision aids that might help someone with severe sight impairment. The advantages and disadvantages of each will be discussed.
Other areas that will be covered are : welfare rights, assistive technology
(such as CCTV, computer software, GPS and mobile phones) and non-optical aids.
The evening will also enable the delegates to understand aspects of safeguarding, emotional needs/ support and services that will support patients to remain independent.
By the end of the evening delegates will be able to support and inform visual impaired patients of services available and how to access them and to facilitate the registration process by knowing who is eligible. They will also be able to provide low vision aids for patients with mild vision loss that are not eligible for registration. The day will enable delegates to understand the benefits of multi-disciplinary working.
Action for Blind People (RNIB group) feel that it is very important that optometrists and dispensing opticians working within the community are informed about patients with visual impairment. As an organisation that provides, not only low vision assessment, but many other support services to enable people with sight loss to live independent fulfilling lives, we are in an ideal position to help with low vision training for optometrists and dispensing opticians

EV-36622 Building Patient Loyalty – Meeting Patient Needs Through Monthly Disposable Contact Lenses (10‑Feb‑2012 09:30) 1 contact lens point CIBA VISION PRACTICE ACADEMY The value that an aftercare appointment can create for a practice often goes unrecognised. The dynamic approach of this course from the Practice Academy helps practitioners see the value of an aftercare appointment and moreover, realise its benefits.
